In 1210
Astley (population 11654) was Asteleghe, the east wood or clearing, from the old English east + leah. Alternative spellings include Asteleye in 1292 and later Astlegh.

Astley. The inscription over the lintel reads, "Erected by Adam Mort and Margret Mort 1650"
Historically a part of Lancashire,
Astley was one of the six townships that made up the ancient parish of Leigh.
Astley was first mentioned in documents in 1210 when Hugh of
Tyldesley, Lord of the Manors of
Tyldesley and
Astley, granted land in
Astley to God and St Mary of Cockersand Abbey.
